How to install Windows Server 2008 R2

Hi welcome to Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2 tutorial this tutorial is  with practical knowledge/approach which will enhance your skills to deploy servers individually with confidence.


Windows Server 2008 is an operating system that replaced Windows Server 2003. Through Servers we can centrally manage settings or services on our computer that are based on Windows operating system. There are seven editions in Windows Server 2008. These editions are  listed below;

  1. Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard
  2. Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise
  3. Windows Server 2008 R2 Datacenter
  4. Windows Web Server 2008 R2
  5. Windows Server 2008 R2 Itanium
  6. Windows Server 2008 R2 Foundation
  7. Windows Server 2008 R2 HPC (High Performance Computing)

In this tutorial we are going to install Enterprise edition. There is a difference between editions based on limited services or roles. if you want to learn more about different editions of windows 2008 server you can visit below links

Minimum Prerequisite

Processor: 1 GHz (32 bit) or 1.4 GHz (64 bit) [Recommended 2 GHz or faster]
RAM: 512 MB [Recommended 2 GB or greater]
Free Hard Disk: 10 GB [Recommended 40 GB or greater]

Installation Device/Media

Insert Bootable DVD or Download ISO image of Windows 10 and burn in USB/DVD through isotousb (for making an usb bootable) and freeburner (to burn and making DVD bootable).

If you are going to install Windows Server through DVD then insert DVD in DVD-ROM and set DVD-ROM on 1st priority in Boot sequence  in BIOS settings by press key Esc, F1, F2 or F10 during the initial startup screen depending on BIOS manufacture a menu appear. ( If your system does not go into bios settings with this method you should follow instructions on your computer screen while its booting)
If you are going to install Windows Server through removable device (USB Flash drive) then plug-in device in USB port and set the USB/removable option on 1st priority as in boot order settings in BIOS setting screen. .

After booting windows server loading files now (screenshot below)


Select language, time format and keyboard type as per your requirement.


Click Install now to begin installation.


Choose your edition in below window .We are interested in Enterprise full installation in this tutorial

OS edition

Accept license terms and click on Next button.

Determine whether you are going to upgrade with old version of server or do a fresh install. Click Custom (advanced) option for fresh  installation and then Next button.

Select disk and create the partition here .Now it is unallocated click on new button and apply changes to create partition and hit Next button.

Wait for several minutes (depends on speed of your system) to complete installation.

Click on  ok button to set the Administrator Password after installation.

Type your  password and confirm . You must use complex password password should contain upper, lower case digits and special characters.

PostInstallation Task

  1. Activate windows server 2008 (it must be done within 60 days after installation otherwise logons will be disabled).
  2. Set the correct date, time and time zone.
  3. Assign a static IP address.
  4. Assign a computer name.
  5. Configure automatic updates.
  6. Download and install available updates.

This explorer open automatic after login to set the tasks. I have highlighted with box.

Change current date and time and change time zone.

Select and right click on network adapter and click on option properties to set the static IP address.

Select IPV4  and click on button properties as mention below image;

Set the name as mention in below image and system needs to restart after you change the name of computer.

As you can see the below image time zone, ip address and computer name is set.

If there is hardware issue or you are going to upgrade the hardware component you need to shutdown your system then go to start>shutdown. Or you may select other options as per planned and click ok button. (Note: servers are running in continuously if there is any issue then we are going to that action plan)
